I dont think Mr. Dupree is right. Although, I am FAR LESS experienced, and very willing to admit it. I just dont believe that backing off timing during detonation is worse than leaving the timing full and continue to detonate (and thusly further heat up). I think the bearing damage and piston damage detonation causes is far worse than removing timing at high RPM under full boost. Maybe Ash did not melt his piston because he wasnt at high enough RPM, or whatever the case may be, but I still dont 100% agree with Mr. Greg Dupree. However, I will agree that removing timing under full boost, will create excessive heat, as shown in EGT's, but I dont believe it will lead to instantaneous meltdown of a piston. I read the whole thread, and it sounded like Greg said that "If you remove timing while detonating under full boost, the hot spot in the cylinder will cause a KAboom". Maybe if it was detonating for a long while and the hot spot was 100 degree + over operating temp as a hotspot I guess and THEN it went into safety boost, but we are talking about minor detonation, and then safety maps kicking in. I believe Ash, with his timing removal, will be fine. I dont believe any car running 12psi+ and AshSpec Ecu will have any problems, even if safety boost is encountered (like a faulty det. sensor or wiring.). I also dont believe that JWT, with its safety map on full timing and full fuel, will cause a problem either, except normal problems from detonation continuing on full throttle runs. I would say Ash's chip is safer than JWT on a high horsepower engine. Now, if you want to correct me, Im all for it. I do not claim to be an expert in any sort of these things I just mentioned, I am just a novice looking for more concrete and correct information. I am applying what I have learned in the past to this as well, and I am no vehicle novice, maybe a 300zx Twin Turbo novice though. Greg can win the argument, if he takes a car to full boost, kicks in the safety map (how about a toggle switch on the det. sensor wiring) and melts something. Thats the only way Im going to believe him. Or maybe if I melt the motor in my car. Its only money and parts, so I wouldnt mind killing a motor, I actually enjoy it. Eric L.
